Introduction

Enriching lives with positive contributions to our community and environment is extremely important to Metro Pte Ltd.

Through social responsibility programs like the Metro For Children annual charity, we are able to fulfill one of the five principles of our mission statement. We also work together with partners, employees, suppliers and shoppers to help create a more caring and sustainable environment such as the Metro eco-friendly shopping bag or BYOBD (Bring Your Own Bag Day) initiative.

All this helps to build stronger local communities and is an effort to minimize our environmental footprint, to create a great workplace, to promote diversity and to be responsive to needy children in Asia.

The Metro For Children charitable campaign was launched in 2001 in collaboration with Metro Pte Ltd. partners, Singapore International Foundation (SIF) and Pioneer Junior College (PJC). The charity aims to help children from needy communities in Cambodia and Vietnam.

Money generously donated for this cause will finance Singaporean volunteers and students to help children in Cambodia and Vietnam. The participants perform charitable community services in and around Asia, ranging from nurturing abandoned orphans, to promoting skills development and building proper sanitation systems.

Your generous donations will mean our Singaporean volunteers and Pioneer Junior College students can help to facilitate and build these children’s futures so that they can grow up to see all their dreams come true.

Pioneer Junior College in Cambodia

Pioneer Junior College (PJC) takes pride in nurturing lifelong learners and proactive, compassionate leaders. PJC’s Character Development Programme, anchored in the college values, provides a variety of learning opportunities via the Lifeskills Programme, Work Shadowing Programme, Overseas Development Programme, Leadership Development Programme and Community Involvement Programme.

Last year’s Metro for Children fund raising donations helped to send 49 students from PJC to go on a community outreach trip to Cambodia. They also performed community services at the Centre for Kolap4 Orphanage, Child & Adolescent Mental Health (CCAMH), and at the Missionaries of Charity (MOC). The students provided both physical and psychological support at the different locations over the trip.

Singapore International Foundation in Vietnam

Established in 1991, the Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to nurture active global citizens and friend for Singapore. SIF facilitates the participation of volunteers in capacity-building programmes in areas as diverse as healthcare and health education, organizational and personal capacity development, empowerment of disadvantaged children, women and families, and rehabilitation of the disabled.

Last year’s donations enabled SIF to continue their three-year project by sending a team of special education professionals from Singapore to train their counterparts at Vietnam’s National College of Education (NCE) in the areas of disability diagnosis, classroom management and mobilization of family support.
