Raden is a traditional art technique that uses the outer shells of mollusks such as snails, clams, and mussels to form patterns and motifs such as flowers, figures, birds and animals, and inlaying them on wood surfaces. A few shells commonly used include mother of pearl (Nacre), abalone and others. The peony flower symbolizes riches, prosperity and honour. Their big petals and strong colors are connected to prosperity and richness in traditional Chinese culture. Together with motifs of peonies, these elegant pieces represent Ming Dynasty’s Raden products.
