As a young man in New Zealand, Jeremy Moon was given a T-shirt by a farmer in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. The T-shirt was not only remarkably soft, but it also refused to hold body odor. This shirt was made of merino wool, a fibre that was then of little value such that it was blended with traditional wool but was in fact an incredible natural material capable of outperforming the best synthetics and plastics. Moon was first to see the huge potential of Merino Wool.
In 1995, Moon launched Icebreaker with Merino Wool as its star product, as an alternative to the hegemony of synthetics. Icebreaker's purpose is to offer our customers a natural alternative to synthetics and to lead the outdoor industry towards sustainable solutions. Now, after more than 20 years, Icebreaker is available in over 40 countries, but the simple idea remains the same: to take a fibre from nature that is designed to keep an animal alive - a merino sheep - and to transform it into a high performance natural clothing system to keep humans alive in nature. The purity of Icebreaker’s relationship with nature and its partners is still what differentiates Icebreaker as the original and most authentic merino brand.
